Education Coordinator III – Juneau, AK

Develop communications activities and products to raise awareness and visibility of the office’s scientific mission, establish and facilitate two-way communications between the Alaska Fisheries Science Center and fishing industry, Alaska Indigenous communities, local schools, universities, other government agencies, and the general public. Responsible for creating and updating various communications products in support of the office’s mission, including press releases, brochures, web content, social media, video products and major reports. Organize and implement annual education and outreach events for Alaska Fisheries Science Center in Juneau and in other Alaska communities in collaboration with local schools and develop social media, press releases, internal and external newsletters, and web content to assist scientists in the Auke Bay Laboratories Division convey their research to a broader public audience.

Specific tasks include:

  • Help in the designing and implementation of Sea Week interpretive programs for Auke Bay Laboratories
    • Sea Week occurs during the month of May each year
    • Audience for Interpretive programs include: Kindergarten classes from Juneau, Alaska who will visit the Auke Bay Laboratory for 45 minutes, and 6th grade classes will visit the Auke Bay Laboratory for 90 minutes.
    • Organize and promote Sea Week by coordinating with teachers to schedule school visits
    • Coordinate lab tours with Auke Bay Staff, including coordinating “show and tell” demonstrations.
  • Assists with development of curriculum, performance measures, identifying potential instructors, and development of mentoring programs.
    • This includes reviewing, analyzing, and evaluating education activities for quality and effectiveness.
  • Assists in planning and developing on and off-site education programs that are creative, varied, multi-sensory, age-specific, and consistent with the mission of the Center.
    • May assist in conducting independent background research/literature reviews on scientific topics; help build partnerships and federal, state, regional, and local education groups; and ensure that educational programming is correlated to state and national education standards and objectives.
  • May participate in the Scientific Writing and Communications Team with the Center’s education efforts, to include both formal and informal activities targeted to the K-12 community and general public.
    • Assists with the development of educational materials specific to the Center's work, including education criteria for local, state, and national application; developing and maintaining extended learning opportunities {educational kits, websites, teacher enhancement training, etc.).
  • Interview scientists and research partners for Alaska Fisheries Science Center web story
    • Complete one web story per month
    • Web stories will include images, videos, and/or infographics
  • Assist with drafting, finalizing and promoting web stories in coordination with AFSC Communications Program
  • Attend various outreach events, including set up and staffing booths, May assist with critical outreach activities, as needed, including fostering public relations and developing and assisting with media events, workshops and printed and web-based products.
    • Compile information from staff and external stakeholders, design, layout and distribute internal and external newsletters

    • Assignments may require completion outside normal hours of operation of the Center and in the accompaniment of Center personnel. For example, accompanying the Center Education Specialist to an educational event on a weekend so that the contractor can gather information to submit in writing.
  • Support AFSC Communications Program as needed in providing education and outreach brochures, flyers, social and web content products as needed (for example, newspaper, radio or television station).
  • Support AFSC Communications Program as needed by assisting graphic design and video production to produce infographics and video products that are focused on marine science topics.
  • Participate in 10 outreach events per year
  • Successfully execute interpretive programs by establishing and coordinating educational programs for approximately 1,200 students, teachers and parents for the annual Sea Week, which is typically held during the month of May.

Qualifications:

  • Must possess a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in education or a related field.
  • Must possess 5 years’ experience as related, i.e. knowledge of education administration, principles, and techniques and course work in ocean ecology, marine biology and/or fisheries management.
  • Possesses a high degree of experience with commonly-used concepts, practices, protocols, and procedures within the education field to plan and accomplish tasks.
  • Experience planning and coordinating education and outreach events and press conferences helping to foster science literacy, and experience with communicating science clearly and accurately.
  • Experience in writing and producing newsletters, brochures, press releases and video products and planning and executing social media campaigns on science topics suitable for a variety of audiences.
  • Experience working with local schools, youth organizations, diverse audiences including but not limited to Alaska Indigenous communities, the Alaska commercial fishing industry, NGO community, state, federal and academic scientists and resource managers, to explain technical and complex science topics and engage a general audience in STEM activities.
  • Professional experience working in mainstream media outlet (e.g., regional newspaper, radio or television station)
  • Experience working with graphic designers, videographers and production teams to write scripts, produce infographics, and video products for the web and social media on marine science topics.
  • Must be able to read and speak fluent English
