English Teacher – US Navy Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, IL
Provide Verbal Instruction for the Future Sailor Preparatory Course (FPSC). Shall be familiar with the course curriculum and technical training devices, including Personal Data Assistants (PDAs), Laptops, Presentation Technology Classrooms (PTCs), Learning Resource Center (LRC) Electronic Podiums, Automated Electronic Classrooms (AECs) and Presentation Technology Classrooms (PTCs), as applicable. Instructor personnel shall obtain, maintain, and display instructional competencies that meet or exceed NITC standards.
Specific tasks include:
- Maintain and display instructional competencies that meet or exceed NITC standards.
- Maintain an orderly, professional atmosphere in all classrooms and laboratories under their cognizance.
- Teach a classroom of FSPC students in a group-paced format using official curricula, to include but not limited to an Instructor Guide, and Student Guide that are either hard copy or digitized.
- Must be able to teach: 150 ASVAB Vocabulary Words Introduction—Definitions and Synonyms, 6 Exercises using ASVAB vocabulary words—Everyday usage and Synonyms, ASVAB Vocabulary Practice Test, 4 Reading Comprehension Exercises—Reading a short paragraph, answering questions related to main ideas, themes, important details, and Reading Comprehension Practice Test..
- Conduct small group and individualized tutoring as an extension of the classroom to foster small group and individualized instruction to assist FSPC students who need additional instruction to comprehend Verbal Reasoning.
- Provide assistance and individual tutoring for recently covered topics.
- Provide guidance on the design, administration, evaluation, and documentation on the effects of academic training protocols for personnel in training who are under the supervision of the military.
- Collaborate with FSPC staff in the suitable application and delivery of academic programs.
- Assist the LSO and COR in developing lesson and test plans for academic instruction.
- Ensure that equipment and facilities are properly organized and utilized and are in safe working condition.
- Prepare classrooms/workstations/other areas of instruction prior to commencing instruction to include equipment set-up and availability of all required instructional material.
- Maintain student records concerning assignments, remedial assignments, individualized training requirements, any test/quiz results and student’s perceived dedication to learning. Maintain security of all files containing Personally Identifiable Information (PII) or other Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI).
- Inventory instructional material, classroom and supply room inventories ensuring the required amount of materials are available.
Qualifications:
- Must possess a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree preferred, in reading education, or closely related field from an accredited educational institution.
- Minimum of 3-years or more of demonstrable accumulated experience (continuous and sustained experience preferred) in (young) adult education (2-year college setting preferred, high school setting acceptable). Experience teaching reading, or reading literacy.
- Experience developing long and short-range planning and coordination of academic improvement programs resulting in attributable results with individuals or groups at the high school or college levels or with military personnel in the accompanying, respective settings.
- Must have completed one of the following forms of training: (a) Military Service Instructor Training Course (ITC) (b) Instructor training via an academic institution (c) Academic credentialing (teacher/professor). Maintenance of required training and/or certification shall be an enduring element of the requirement.
- ITC training requirements. Academic institutions ITC should contain at a minimum, these Learning Objectives:
- Effective communication and questioning techniques.
- Adult learning theory and principles.
- Instructional Delivery methods.
- Lesson delivery performance laboratory.
- Training environment management.
- Inter-personal skills.
- Evaluation and Feedback.
- ITC training requirements. Academic institutions ITC should contain at a minimum, these Learning Objectives:
- Ability to gain familiarity with applicable Navy rules, regulations and Navy course curriculum.
- Possess familiarity with Technical Training Equipment, Technical Training Devices, including Electronic Podiums, Automated Electronic Classrooms (AECs), Presentation Technology Classrooms (PTCs), Video Teaching and Teleconference (VTT), Instructor podium, and equipment.
- Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and sound skills in written and oral communication is a must.
- Must be able to read, write and speak fluent English.
- Must be a US Citizen.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance.
