Position Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented and customer-focused Data Operator I to support the National Fire Academy (NFA) in Emmitsburg, Maryland. This role plays a vital part in preparing and supporting course operations, managing classroom materials, performing administrative tasks, and ensuring an efficient and professional learning environment for the Academy’s students and staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Distribute and compile precourse assignments for designated NFA courses.
- Prepare and deliver classroom support materials (manuals, office supplies, audiovisual tools) prior to course start times, per provided classroom setup sheets.
- Retrieve and inventory all classroom materials at course conclusion, typically Sunday evenings.
- Clean and reset classrooms used by special groups, grant programs, or meetings.
- Respond to phone and email inquiries within 24 hours.
- Conduct bi-weekly manual inventory checks; communicate updates to Data Entry Operator II for database maintenance.
- Assist with lab operations, including CCNM labs; must complete designated ICS online training courses.
- Update facility directories in designated buildings as assigned.
- Provide administrative support for outgoing mailings and email communications.
- Maintain a safe and orderly workplace, attending safety training as required and reporting safety issues as needed.
- Perform light duties and other related tasks as assigned by the Project Manager.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma required.
- U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency.
- Must successfully complete a background check.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and a customer-service mindset.
- Minimum typing speed of 35 wpm with strong accuracy.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Familiarity with complex office procedures and materials handling.
- Capable of working independently and managing time effectively.
- Physical stamina to sit, stand, lift, bend, and perform repetitive tasks for extended periods.
- Availability to work evenings, weekends, and occasional holidays as needed.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
This position is primarily located in an office and classroom support environment at the National Fire Academy. Duties require regular movement across the facility, lifting of supplies, and physical setup of classrooms.
Physical requirements include:
- Standing, walking, and sitting for extended periods
- Lifting/moving up to 50 lbs
- Using hands to manipulate materials and tools
- Occasional kneeling, crouching, or climbing stairs
- Clear verbal and written communication
