Job Summary: We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Engineering Technician VI to provide technical support services for the National Forests in North Carolina (NFsNC), primarily focusing on the Engineering and Recreation Program. This role involves project planning, preliminary surveys, scoping, inspections, GIS, and data management in support of NFsNC’s engineering and recreation priorities. The ideal candidate will possess expertise in trail design, maintenance, and management, alongside strong GIS experience.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Pre-Design & Site Assessment: Conduct detailed site assessments and surveys for various projects, establishing baseline data to initiate maintenance and construction projects. Perform condition assessments and field surveys to determine existing conditions and recommend actions.
  • Task Order Development & Inspections: Plan and develop task orders, perform fieldwork, and prepare maps, drawings, reports, cost estimates, and contract documents. Conduct inspections for ongoing maintenance and construction projects and generate detailed inspection reports.
  • GIS & Data Management: Provide technical services related to GIS, data management, and other related tools to support project tasks.
  • Project Support: Support trail maintenance and construction projects, including tracking systems for trail projects, assessing and inspecting trail conditions, and providing necessary technical documentation.

Qualifications:

  • Education & Experience: Strong understanding of trail design, maintenance, and management. Experience with GIS and trail work is required. Previous experience in field reconnaissance, data collection, and working with contract documents is preferred.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in GIS tools and data management systems, and experience in preparing cost estimates, reports, and specifications.
  • Communication: Ability to communicate project progress effectively and address any obstacles that may affect project timelines.

Required Certifications and Training:

  • Completion of the following training courses upon hiring:
  • Understanding and Interrupting Unconscious Bias
  • Anti-Harassment Training
  • Information Security Awareness
  • USDA Records Management
  • Section 508 Compliance Training (All courses are available through AgLearn, with annual completion requirements.)

Travel Requirements:
The contractor will need to travel to project locations for pre-design scoping activities, assessments, and inspections. Travel reimbursement for transportation and lodging will be provided.

Special Requirements:

  • Must possess or be able to obtain a Linc Pass.
  • Background checks may be required for the position.
  • Must follow USDA procedures for the collection of Personally Identifiable Information (PII).
